About

Chris Ellis is an artist photographer based in Whitby, North Yorkshire. He grew up in Liverpool and for a while attended Trent Polytechnic, learning the basics of photography and darkroom skills. Chris has worked as a landscape gardener, a youth worker and a graphic designer. For many years, he ran a small design studio specialising in work for museums, galleries and arts organisations.

His practice is based largely on a spiritual engagement with the natural environment and his emotional response to, and interpretation of, the world around him. Working mainly in black and white and using both digital and film cameras, he develops, scans and prints his own work – giving him a physical connection to both the process and outcome.

“Although I like to invoke mystery, inference and emotion in my work, I try to retain the qualities that characterise photography and acknowledge the direct influence of light and the role of the lens in making images.”

Education: Art Foundation – Trent Polytechnic.
B.A. in Art & Drama – City of Liverpool College.
M.A. in Advanced Digital Design – Teesside University.
