This Vanishing Land

This Vanishing Land is a work in progress – a meditation on the themes of loss and mortality seen through the erosion of land surrounding the artist’s home. The disappearance of the land under our feet serving as a metaphor for loss and consequent grief.

Coastal erosion in North Yorkshire on the east coast of Britain has been documented since Roman times. Rates of erosion on this coast are thought to be amongst the worst in Europe. The erosion has been caused by a temporal scale of sea currents, tides and weather phenomena, such as storms and rainfall.

Today, the large timescale of these processes is being compressed by human-made climate change. As a result, some estimates say that the future rate of coastal erosion will increase by three to seven times the 21st century rate.
